According to a ranking compiled by the EdelGive Foundation and Hurun Report, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group, has emerged as the world's most prominent philanthropist over the last century.

The first-ever Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropist of the Century list ranks Jamsetji Tata ahead of Bill and Melinda Gates, Warren Buffet, Henry Hughes, and George Soros.

It should be mentioned that the ranking is based on Total Philanthropic Value, which is derived by combining the value of the assets adjusted for inflation with the total of contributions or distributions made to date.

The data for the report was gathered from publicly available sources and, in certain cases, directly shared by the foundations.According to the report, India's pioneer entrepreneur Jamsetji Tata's donations over the previous century are worth $102.4 billion today.

He is succeeded by Bill and Melinda Gates ($74.6 billion), Warren Buffett ($37.4 billion), George Soros ($34.8 billion), and John D Rockefeller ($26.8 billion).

"Whilst American and European philanthropists may have dominated philanthropy thinking over the last century, Jamsetji Tata, founder of India's Tata Group, is the world's biggest philanthropist," Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman and chief researcher of Hurun, said in a statement.

Most of Tata's donations were in education and healthcare sector

Jamsetji Tata's donations were primarily in the education and healthcare sectors. He had allocated two-thirds of the ownership to trusts engaged in charitable operations.

According to the study, Jamsetji Tata began donating as early as 1892.
