Dragon Ball: Super Saiyan Blue Evolved, Explained (2024)

Super Saiyan Blue as a transformation shows immense power and speed, being an extension of Super Saiyan God. Dragon Ball portrays this power through Goku and Vegeta, and for the majority of the story, it has become the Saiyan duo's go-to transformation for every big threat they need to fight against. However, it was during the Tournament of Power that Vegeta achieved a stronger version of Super Saiyan Blue that pushed his body to the limit, called Super Saiyan Blue Evolved. This new transformation ultimately gave him even more power and definition comparable to Super Saiyan Blue 20x Kaioken during Dragon Ball.

However, the important question to consider is what this power really is, and why exactly it was achievable for Vegeta. How much power and speed does the transformation give to Vegeta, and why is Super Saiyan Blue Evolved exclusive to the Saiyan prince, as opposed to also being included with Goku?

The transformation has its basis in Super Saiyan Blue, the transformation of a Super Saiyan God going Super Saiyan. The transformation wouldn't get much appearance in the show until Vegeta experimented with the idea of Ultra Instinct into his abilities, even with the failure of getting into the mindset having been made a fact during the Tournament of Power. The Saiyan Prince just wasn't meant to use Ultra Instinct at the time, but he needed to gain a stronger transformation to damage Jiren and fight back at the same time. Which is where Super Saiyan Blue Evolved came in kicking, and immediately a lot of details sprung up being callbacks to a previous transformation.

Super Saiyan Blue Evolved has a lot of physical similarities to Super Vegeta from back in the Cell Saga, where Vegeta has his muscles growing to almost bulging proportions, and his strength and speed increase beyond the limits of Super Saiyan Blue. The transformation is by no means weak, despite it not having made much of an impact on Jiren, considering the transformation was equal to Goku's Super Saiyan Blue 20x Kaioken transformation. On top of that, the anime has gone to great lengths to show this transformation, being a reiteration of Vegeta's growth and willingness to overcome his own limits in the Tournament of Power. However, there are more details as to what he managed to learn with this transformation, and the techniques that allowed him to fight against a certain Manga villain.

During the Moro arc, Vegeta and Goku were defeated by the magic-wielding Moro, although they escaped with their lives. Vegeta realized that in order to combat Moro effectively, he needed to gain some training from the Yardratians, which led him to learn the Forced Spirit Fission technique. In conjunction with SSB Evolved, Vegeta used the technique to separate the energy that Moro had consumed and manipulated it to use it against Moro, while also depriving him of his strength. This technique was the first instance of Vegeta learning from another alien race, which led to his SSB Evolved form using that technique in the final battle against Moro. This further developed Vegeta's willingness to surpass his limits, and not just with a new transformation, but also a change in perspective, and treading down a different path from Goku.

It's safe to say the SSB Evolved transformation is a useful one for Vegeta, and only even more so with all of his techniques and the Forced Spirit Fission as part of his arsenal. However, the transformation doesn't seem to be that well-liked by most of the fandom despite its boost. Part of that could be due to the superficial meaning many attribute to the transformation, whereas the later transformation, Ultra Ego, feels more like a connection to Vegeta's progression as a Saiyan and character in the story of Dragon Ball. Even so, there are a lot of reasons to appreciate the transformation as a way of keeping Vegeta relevant. There is also reason to believe this transformation marked the start of what many fans wanted from Vegeta, a different path that he'd take instead of always following behind Goku. Dragon Ball seems to be getting out of its old habits in this direction, and Super Saiyan Blue Evolved Vegeta was the start of that journey.
