Suspected Houthi attack targets a ship in the Gulf of Aden, while Iraqi-claimed attack targets Eilat

Authorities say a suspected missile attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels has targeted a ship in the Gulf of Aden. It follows the departure of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower after a deployment in which the aircraft carrier led the American response to the Houthi assaults that have reduced shipping drastically through the route. The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center says a merchant vessel off the coast of Aden reported a missile impact in the water nearby. Its crew was safe. Meanwhile, the Israeli military said a drone fell off the coast of Eilat.Iraq militants allied to the Houthis claimed that attack. What Jamaal Bowman's loss in New York means for the future of 'the Squad'

  • By FARNOUSH AMIRI and ANTHONY IZAGUIRRE - Associated Press

George Latimer's decisive victory over Rep. Jamaal Bowman in suburban New York dealt the left-flank its first electoral defeat this cycle. It is now raising concerns about how other incumbents might fare in the coming months and whether the progressives party’s recent ascension in Washington is coming to an end. His loss also disrupted what has generally been a stable primary season for congressional incumbents. While the primary highlighted the Democratic party's deep divisions over the war in Gaza, progressives are warning that Bowman’s defeat should not be seen as a bellwether for the coalition’s standing as a whole. Texas man executed for 2001 abduction and killing of 18-year-old woman

  • By JUAN A. LOZANO and MICHAEL GRACZYK - Associated Press

The state of Texas has executed a man who kidnapped, sexually assaulted and fatally shot an 18-year-old woman in 2001. Inmate Ramiro Gonzales was pronounced dead after a chemical injection Wednesday evening at the state penitentiary in Huntsville. The 41-year-old man was condemned to die for killing Bridget Townsend after kidnapping her from a home in a rural area northwest of San Antonio in January 2001. Townsend's body wasn’t found until October 2002, when Gonzales led authorities to her remains after he had received two life sentences for kidnapping and raping another woman. Gonzales was repeatedly apologetic to the victim's family in his final words before the lethal injection began. Read moreTexas man executed for 2001 abduction and killing of 18-year-old woman

Hawks take Zaccharie Risacher with No. 1 pick, second straight year a player from France is first

  • By BRIAN MAHONEY - AP Basketball Writer

The Atlanta Hawks took Zaccharie Risacher with the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft on Wednesday night, the second straight year a player from France was the first player selected. Risacher doesn’t come with the enormous height or hype of Victor Wembanyama, the towering center who went to San Antonio last year and went on to win the Rookie of the Year award. But the Hawks saw him as the best choice in what has been viewed as a draft absent of elite talent. This is the first time that the draft has gone consecutive years without the No. 1 pick being someone who played at an American college. Washington Wizards take French 7-footer Alex Sarr with the No. 2 pick in the NBA draft

  • By NOAH TRISTER - AP Sports Writer

The Washington Wizards drafted French 7-footer Alex Sarr with the second pick in the NBA draft. They used their highest selection in 14 years to add some much-needed size to a team that won only 15 games last season. Sarr played last season for the Perth Wildcats in Australia. He also spent two years in the U.S. with Overtime Elite, a developmental league. The Wizards are a year removed from a front office overhaul and an offseason in which they traded Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis. Tesla ordered to stop releasing toxic emissions from San Francisco Bay Area plant

  • AP

Tesla must fix air quality problems at its electric vehicle manufacturing facility in the San Francisco Bay Area after racking up more than 100 violations for allegedly releasing toxic emissions into the atmosphere over the last five years. That is according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District's independent hearing board. The board announced its decision Tuesday and planned to release a written order later this week. The board pointed to the facility’s paint shop operations as a specific problem. Tesla’s public relations department did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday. Biden pardons potentially thousands of ex-service members convicted under now-repealed gay sex ban

  • By ZEKE MILLER - AP White House Correspondent

President Joe Biden is pardoning potentially thousands of former U.S. service members convicted of violating a now-repealed military ban on consensual gay sex. The president says he is “righting an historic wrong” to clear the way for these service members to regain lost benefits. Biden’s action grants a pardon to those who were convicted under the Uniform Code of Military Justice’s former Article 125, which criminalized sodomy. The law had been on the books since 1951 but was rewritten in 2013 to prohibit only forcible acts. The president is exercising his pardon powers during Pride Month. He is working to rally support within the Democratic-leaning LGBTQ community ahead of the presidential election. Hawks make French teen Zaccharie Risacher only the 2nd No. 1 overall pick in franchise history

  • By CHARLES ODUM - AP Sports Writer

The Atlanta Hawks are looking for French teen Zaccharie Risacher to help revive the franchise after making the forward the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft. The 19-year-old Risacher impressed the Hawks as a catch-and-shoot scorer with ideal size for a wing. The 6-foot-9, 215-pound Risacher joins guards Trae Young and Dejounte Murray and forward Jalen Johnson as foundation players for a team which has not won a playoff series since advancing to the 2021 Eastern Conference finals. Hawks general manager Landry Fields took advantage of franchise's first opportunity to take the No. 1 overall pick since 1975. The Latest | Bolivian general apparently behind failed coup claims president asked for uprising

  • AP

The army general apparently behind a failed coup attempt has claimed that the president asked him to storm the government palace in a political move. Shortly before he was arrested Wednesday, Juan José Zúñiga told reporters: “The president told me: ‘The situation is very screwed up, very critical. It is necessary to prepare something to raise my popularity.’” Zúñiga said he asked President Luis Arce if he should “take out the armored vehicles?” and Arce replied, “Take them out.” Arce has not commented on Zúñiga’s claim. The Associated Press has asked the Ministry of the Presidency, but there has been no immediate reply. Tribes honor the birth of a rare white buffalo calf in Yellowstone and reveal its name: Wakan Gli

  • By AMY BETH HANSON and MEAD GRUVER - Associated Press

Native American religious ceremonies with dancing, drumming, singing and the retelling of a sacred legend commemorated the recent birth of a rare white buffalo calf in Yellowstone National Park. The calf was born earlier this month in the park's vast Lamar Valley. To the several tribes who revere American bison, the calf’s appearance was both the fulfilment of sacred prophesy and a message. Chief Arvol Looking Horse of the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota Oyate in South Dakota said in Wednesday's ceremonies near West Yellowstone, Montana, that the message is for people to work together to preserve the Earth for their children.
