Vienna is divided into 23 districts, each with its own charm and flavor. Innere Stadt, as the First district of Vienna is the city center and the most prestigious district. It has the highest rental rates and many historical landmarks.
In 1857 Emperor Franz Joseph I decided to demolish the walls around the old town to improve integration with its suburbs that had grown up around and place the rest of the city in indexed areas around the Innere Stadt. The bricks of those former walls have turned into a wide Boulevard the Ringstraße or Ring road marking the boundaries of the area.
Ringstraße consists of 9 sections: the Stubenring in the East becomes the Parkring, and then the Schubertring. The Kertner ring, which turns into the Opernring in the South, the Burgring turns into the Dr-Karl-Renner-Ring, and then the Universitätsring in the North and the Schottenring, which leads to the Danube, the final part of the border.
