The status of nuclear forces (estimated, as of January 2023)

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), who signed the MOU with Hiroshima Prefecture, launches the SIPRI YEARBOOK 2023 and announces the latest status of nuclear forces.

As of January 2023, the total number of nuclear stockpile is 12,512. It decreases 193 compared with the number for January 2022. The U.S. and Russian nuclear stockpiles together continue to constitute around 90 percent of the total.

The SIPRI Yearbook analyzes that the declining “is primarily due to the USA and Russia dismantling retired warheads. Global reductions of operational warheads appear to have stalled, and their numbers are rising again.”

While the total numbers of the U.S. and Russian nuclear stockpiles decrease, both states increase the number of deployed warheads. China, India, and Pakistan grow the size of its nuclear weapon inventories. The UK is assessed that its 45 warheads estimated to retire and await dismantlement last year “are likely to be reconstituted to become part of the UK’s growing stokpile over the coming years.” North Korea has assembled perhaps 30 warheads, though it might have produced enough fissile material to build 50-70 nuclear warheads.
