What Are 6-Lug Wheels? Bolt Patterns Explained

Right off the bat, what are we talking about when we say "six-lug," and how do you even know if that's what your Chevy has? This is the first measurement in what's known as a bolt pattern, which takes the number of lug nut holes on your wheels and combines that with the measurement from the top to bottom of the bolts sitting on opposite ends of the wheel.

Since the late 1960s, most Chevy trucks have had a standard bolt pattern of 6x5.5 (or 6x139.7 in some measurements). This means that these trucks have six lug nut holes and a distance of 5.5 inches from the center of the top lug to the center of the lug immediately opposite of it.

Which Chevrolet Models Are Compatible With 6-Lug Wheels?

The 6x5.5 bolt pattern is the most common layout for Chevrolet trucks and SUVs by a pretty wide margin, and you'll find this measurement on all popular models including the Silverado 1500, Colorado, Tahoe, and Suburban. Heavier-duty Silverado 2500 and 3500 trucks will have an incompatible 8-lug pattern, and most of the smaller SUVs in the Chevy lineup will have a five-lug pattern, so keep that in mind on your search.

As far as the best wheel sizes are concerned, standard fitment on the Silverado 1500, Suburban and Tahoe should stay within 18-20 inches in diameter and around 9 inches in width. These encompass some of the most common sizes in the truck wheel business (including 18x9 and 20x9), so you shouldn't have any problems getting set up with a great set of wheels to fit your Chevy truck.

Of course, you're also able to go a bit larger too if you want, as for the Silverado especially it's not uncommon to see 10-wides and 12-wides able to fit it. Just know that with wider wheels and more aggressive offsets, you may need to do some additional trimming to avoid your wheels rubbing against the wheel well.
